Flat Plain Figure Carving

Instructor: Don Johannesen

The skill taught in this class will be Flat Plane Figure Carving. The name comes from the simple straight cuts that form flat planes to develop a shape, as
opposed to frequent rounding cuts of a more sculptural form.

A traditional folk art of Norway and Sweden, it was often done as an evening pastime. Typical subjects would be farmers, gnomes, trolls, dragons or a favorite, “Gamle Erik” (Old Erik),
the Norwegian version of the devil.

Don is a student of Scandinavian folk art in wood. He has worked with many teachers at the Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum in Decorah, Iowa and at the Norsk Wood Works in Barronett, Wisconsin.

If your goal is to make money from your work, the easiest way to do this is to identify who the people are who are most likely to buy your work. We call these people your perfect customers or target market. In this session we will get very clear about who your perfect customers are, what they do, where they go, as much information about them as we can come up with so we know how best to reach them. We will then look to see who already knows and works with our target market and develop ways to partner with those professionals to sell our work. We want to be able to have our work available where our customers are most likely to buy it. We will also develop methods to keep track of our customers and to keep in touch with them.

Strategize Your Marketing

Instructor: Sheryl Kosovski

Who will you customers be and how do you want to reach them? The answer to that question is the basis of your marketing plan. Tools for marketing include a portfolio, artist statement, business card, letterhead, envelopes, brochures, invitations to show, a resume, a website and others. Instruction will be given to prepare these items as well as information to put together a plan and schedule for reaching your market. We will do exercises for writing your artist statement in working groups so that it will need only finishing touches by the end of the program.

Keeping Track of the Money

Instructor: Sheryl Kosovski

Dealing with money is one of the most challenging tasks that artists face. We have been told by so many people that it is difficult or next to impossible to sell our work that many of us have developed the attitude that we should be grateful that we just get to do something we love and that money should not be part of the conversation. I hope to dispel these myths in this session and give you the tools you need to keep track of your income and expenses and a formula for pricing your work. We will also talk about what is referred to as under earning or messages that we have internalized that have us working for very little money or even sabotaging ourselves and keeping ourselves from being able to make a great living doing what we love.

Growing your Career

Instructor: Sheryl Kosovski

Where do you begin and how do you grow your career as a professional artist? Most of us have no idea what it takes to create a successful career in the arts. In this last session of the year we will develop a comprehensive strategy for exactly how you begin and where. Then we will go over what kinds of shows and galleries you should be pursuing in order to grow your career. We will go over which opportunities will move your exhibition and sales career forward and which will keep you from growth. Then we will create a plan to move out of your region and eventually into the national arena. Sheryl will help you put pencil to paper to develop a personal plan to get you to your desired outcome.

Investigate your local library, or check out your local book store. Used copies are also available online via Amazon.com for around $30.

People who have taken the portrait modeling class might wish to cast that work in this class.
