Dragons, mermaids and sea monsters, and sometimes serious commentary on social issues

-- Kari makes work that is occasionally whimsical. Her pieces are often an exploration of form in space, and her love for color and painting can be seen in the glazes as they take on a painterly appearance. In this show she will have 20 large vessels ranging from 15 to 25 inches tall, along with a few smaller pieces and some wall pieces.

HVAC grant Matched

We received a grant for new heating and airconditioning for most of our building from the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County.
We received enough donations for our part of the matching grant. Thanks to everyone that contributed

Geil kiln grant Matched

Using a matching grant from The Community Foundation of Saint Joseph County, Fire Arts has purchased and installed a Geil gas kiln. The increased capacity that the kiln affords will improve the potential for both potters and sculptors, providing a higher cone firing for the potters and allowing both potters and sculptors to create larger work. Tuck Langland Commission

Resident Artists Becky Wainright and Tuck Langland stand with his assistant artist Cara Lawson Ball between "Industry" and "Commerce" after their months of work, December 2, 2007. The 12' high figures, each now cast in 1200 pounds of bronze, are standing on 5' granite cubes with water flowing from side slits as the formal entry to the new Federal Reserve Bank in Kansas City, Missouri. The building, designed by Pei, Cobb, Freed and Partners, Architects, and dedicated in June 2008, replaces one from 1922 which had Art Deco reliefs by Henry Hering on which these are based.

Thai Fest: Cultural Exchange 2008

The Thai Fest: Cultural Exchange, which took place from July 13 – 26, 2008, involved the community in a unique opportunity to offer an American experience to a small group of Thai sculptors and ceramic artists. These artists are employed by the Thai government in the Traditional Art division of the Fine Arts Department.

Our visitors from the government studios in Bangkok, Thailand spent two weeks in our community. They made portraits of Peg Luecke and Gabrielle Robinson and cast them using our bronze casting techniques, rather than the traditional Thai method they use at home. They also visited local art sites and had dinners in many American homes and restaurants. This was the first time that the Thai government sent ordinary workers, not just government officials, to another country.

Thai Cultural Exchange 2006

When Fire Arts was invited by the government of Thailand to visit the country and work in their government sculpture studio, we jumped at the chance. Seven of us flew to Thailand in July 2006. On our return, we offered an exhibit of artwork and artifacts from our trip and a slide lecture.
